Chapter 2 Summary

After reviewing Chapter 2, it was quite interesting finding out some things about Email, something that I’ve been using everyday for basically my entire life. When I would think about sending an email I think of it almost as a text message, but after reading the chapter, I figured out that it actually works a whole lot differently and is pretty complex to the average person. The email you send gets broken down into packets and travels through a bunch of different protocols, therefore to be able to reach the intended user. Something else I was sort of aware of but didn’t realize the severity  of is, phishing scams in emails. Spam and phishing emails are about 90% of daily emails sent through all platforms and they can come in the form of a link, a file attached, or even the title of the email! So if you receive a suspicious email from an unknown sender, best bet is to not open it and delete it immediately.

Another aspect of the chapter that I thought was interesting and that I can now relate to, is the use and reality of Nettiquete. When I was younger I would write out an email for a teacher, or my guidance counselor or whoever it would always be very informal and hard to read, mainly due to improper grammar and punctuation. At the time I didn’t realize but now I understand how important these rules are and also the importance of first impressions not only in person but over the internet such as an email. For a college student like me, I would use this concept when emailing a professor and keeping it professional by not using Mr/Mrs, first and last name, or even emailing about something that is already on the Syllabus/outline, as this would mean I did not actually read any of the material.

I don’t typically send group e-mails ever so learning about the CC’s and BCC’s was quite interesting. I was unaware that you could send messages to multiple people, and when replying to said email, you can reply to only a specific person or a specific group of people, whoever you may choose when responding. I thought this was very interesting because I lacked the knowledge of this beforehand so now if I ever find myself having to send a group email I will be able to do so efficiently without sending an improper message to the wrong person included in the thread.
